Best Dressed and Best Jewels of the 2016 Oscars

In case you missed it, the Oscars was Sunday, and Hollywood royalty pulled out all the stops to remind you how fabulous they are. Highlights of the evening (in my opinion) were Spotlight (one of my favorite movies I have seen this year) pulling an upset to win Best Picture, Chris Rock selling his daughter’s Girl Scout cookies to the rich and famous, and of course, Leo finally winning an Oscar.

I was blown away  by the amount of hits and very few misses on the Oscars red carpet this year and thus had a hard time picking my best dressed and best jewels. There were, however, two standouts that hands down had killer head to toe Oscar looks:

Charlize Theron and Rachel McAdams

Comment below and tell me which look was your favorite!  Like I said before, it was hard to choose my favorite Oscars look as I thought everyone was a winner in my book. Now I just need to see all the winning films! Until next awards season!

Custom Button Project: Before and After

Custom jewelry is one of my specialties.  These custom projects help me grow as a jewelry designer as each one is a challenge and is usually something new to me.   Many people have something special passed down from generations that is just sitting in a drawer.  Why not repurpose and remake it into something wearable ?  Each of these projects have a special story to them, which makes me all the more invested to make something spectacular.

I’d like to share my most recent custom project that I did for my Zeta Tau Alpha sister, Lindsey Brown.  Lindsey contacted me about making custom Christmas presents for her family out of saved buttons from her Grandfather’s Air Force jacket.

Air Force Buttons | Hermosa Jewelry

Air Force Project | Hermosa Jewelry

Here is a little background on Lindsey’s grandfather and exactly where those buttons came from.  Charles Waddell Redfearn served in the United States Military for 26 years.  Six of those years were dedicated to the Navy and twenty years in the Air Force flying the F4-E “Phantom”, logging more than 4,500 flying hours.  He served during World War II, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War.  During the Vietnam War, he flew as a “Wild Weasel” fighter pilot, which was a highly recognized special group of pilots flying close air support missions prior to ground troops entering the combat zone.  During this time, he was stationed in both Vietnam and Thailand.  While in Thailand, he received the Thai Medal of Honor and acted as the Battle Staff Commander and Director, Tactical Analysis.  Several of his additional decorations included the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Air Medal and Air Force Commendation Medal.  He retired at the young age of 48 as a full Bird Colonel.

Custom Hermosa Jewelry Necklaces

Lindsey gave me a lot of direction for each design for each one of her family members (she is an avid Hermosa follower).  She helped me with color and stone choices, and I incorporated the buttons into my normal designs.  We ended up with three long necklaces, two short necklaces, two delicate chain necklaces, and two pairs of post earrings.Hermosa Jewelry Custom Button Necklaces DSC_0088

Lindsey was so excited to give these to her two sisters, mom, and grandmother for Christmas.  Here are all the girls together in their custom button necklaces!  Lindsey texted me the day of: “The necklaces were such a hit! Everyone LOVES them all and told me to tell you what a wonderful job that you did.  Thanks for all your hard work. ”  Lindsey put a lot of time and effort into this project as well and was such a pleasure to work with.  I’m honored to have brought life back to these buttons for them to cherish for the rest of their lives.

Spotlight: Stoned by Stone

I came across these bejeweled Stoned by Stone phone cases on Instagram, and I instantly fell in love.  If I was a phone case, this is what I would look like- completely jeweled, super glam, and unique.  These one of a kind cases are handcrafted by Frances Stone with vintage broaches, earrings, beads, and rhinestones.  Frances even created a custom case for me with my own collection of sentimental trinkets and vintage pieces–and I will say, I’m OBSESSED!
Below you can read about the background, inspiration, and design process in my Q & A with Frances.  Make sure to follow her at @stonedbystone!

Q & A with Frances Stone, designer of Stoned by Stone
1.  Why did you start making these jeweled phone cases?
I have always been a huge fan of costume jewelry. The bigger and sparklier the better! I’ve been collecting all sorts of pieces from vintage heirlooms left behind by my Grandmother to cool pieces from the thrift shop.
My best friend in college, her mother inspired the idea to put the bling on a phone case. Tammy (nicknamed “Tiger”) had one she made herself entirely made up of Swarovski crystals and embellished with her initials. Her creation was the most amazing thing I had ever seen. I lusted after it every time we would visit, so i decided to make one of my own. My phone case got me a lot of attention, so I started producing them for friends and came up with Stoned By Stone. My last name is Stone and the cases are covered in rhinestones so it’s more than appropriate!
2.  What inspires your design process?
A badass piece of costume jewelry with lots of sparkle! Sourcing is inspiring too because I get so excited to see what kind of goodies are in the jewelry case! The ladies at the shops look at me like I’m crazy when I leave with 10-20 weird and cheesy baubles, earrings, brooches, pendants, etc.
3.  How long does it take to make one case?
On average it takes me about 2 hours to create one phone case. Then I like to walk away from it and come back to it the next day to see what else I can add to make it fully complete.
4.  Are they sturdy enough to use daily?  Or are they for special occasion?
I encourage everyone to use them daily! I mean, whats the point of having such an awesome one of a kind piece of artwork on the back of your phone if you’re not going to show it off? You’ll be amazed at the comments and conversations your phone case will start.
Each one is made with industrial strength glue . I do tell people, YES stones will fall out SOMETIMES but find your own sentimental pieces and add them on to the existing case!
I still have the very first phone cases I ever made, and they are in immaculate shape for all the use I got out them.
5.  Where do you sell them?  How much do they retail for?
They are for available for purchase on my Etsy Shop and in local stores: Lori+Lulu, Candy Shop Vintage and Holy City Consignment. They retail for $110 a piece.
6.  Where would you like to see your business go in the future?
First, I would like to see my phone cases on the red carpet! Like how cool would it be to have Rihanna and Miley Cyrus carrying a Stoned By Stone phone case to the VMAs? I am currently doing some projects for myself that include taxidermy animals (deer), stoning them and completely up-cycling them into works of art. I would eventually like to sell them or rent them out for editorial things, parties, events, film, etc.

Five Fabulous Coats Under $200

I have finally switched over my closet, and gotten into fall clothes mode. For the most part, I have purchased all my new pieces for the cold seasons, and am enjoying the almost crisp air and sunshine (finally). One accessory I can not live without this Fall is an awesome coat. Outerwear can make an outfit, and with so many styles and trends it can be hard to choose what to invest in.

I have found five coats that won’t break the bank this fall, so that you can rock multiple trends all season!

My 5 Favorite Fall Trends

Happy Fall everyone! I couldn’t be happier to welcome Pumpkin Spiced Lattes, cool weather, and of course a new wardrobe into the last three months of the year. I know I say it every year, but Fall is definitely my favorite season when it comes to my personal style. I love being able to accessorize with boots, hats, scarves, and jackets, and even more so, I love the deep rich color tones associated with the season.

In honor of the beginning of my favorite season I will be highlighting five fall trends I am definitely going to be rocking in the next few months!

Black Ankle Boots

The fall style has a lot of blasts from the past. One of those is the return of the black ankle boot. Whether you’re into combat or heels, flats or moto-chic, you’re definitely going to want to trade in your open-toe wedges for these closet fall staples!

Sam Edleman | Petty Black Brahma                      Vince Camuto | Pierson Moto Bootie

Black Ankle Boots | Hermosa Jewelry

Sole Society | Black Wrap Around Buckle             Urban Outfitters | Poppy Ankle Boot

Chunky Sweaters

Because what could possibly be better than throwing on a cozy warm sweater as the weather starts to turn?  I love sweaters because you have the ability to dress them up with leather pants and heals, or throw on with a pair of jeans or better yet leggings for a casual fall feel.

Ecote | Arianna Patterned Cardigan                    Free People | Underground Hoodie

Chunky Sweaters | Hermosa Jewelry

Madewell | Ribbed Turtleneck Sweater                                  TNA | Dorset Sweater

Structured Outerwear

I am really digging the menswear inspired structured jackets and vests as a major fall trend this year. I always like to add on to my outfits to follow the three piece rule, and pieces like these are essential. These pieces are GREAT for the office, but can also be styled for a night out on the town. Just because they are inspired by masculinity doesn’t mean you can’t make them feminine by purchasing bright colors!

Topshop | Holly Sleeveless Jacket    BB Dakota | Catina Coat          Topshop | Belted Biker Vest

Structured Outerwear | Hermosa Jewelry

Plaid

Okay, I know what you’re thinking…Plaid was so Limited Too circa 1996. And while you are correct, it is making a comeback, and I can’t say I hate it. Any excuse to wear a plaid flannel is okay in my books. This fall though, I challenge you to step outside your boyfriend’s flannel, and purchase a feminine shirt or skirt to bring back plaid!

Rails | Hunter Long Sleeve Shirt          Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafani | Wool Blanket Skirt

Plaid | Hermosa Jewelry

BB Dakota | Jaslene Buffalo Plaid Coat                       Heather | Cambridge Dress

70’s Inspired Pieces

Time to raid Mom’s closet. Seriously though,  you can probably find some old gems of hers that will fit right into this fall’s trends. Look for suede, flares, over the knee boots, hats, saddlebags, and flowy dresses. Stores such as H&M and Forever 21 are really embracing this trend, so if you can’t find anything in the attic, you will be able to shop for a reasonable price.

Forever 21 | Baroque Print High-Neck Romper     Lauren Conrad | High Waist Wide Leg Pant

70s | Hermosa Jewelry

Topshop | MOTO Button Front A-Line Skirt         Chloe | Suede Over-the-Knee Flat Boot

Alright all my Fall Fashionistas! Comment below with your favorite Fall trend.  And, get out there and start shopping, I know yall will look great this season!

New York Fashion Week: Spring 2016

New York Fashion Week is here again! Nothing is a better expression of art than a designer’s latest styles and masterpieces taking on the catwalk. Designers have sent some exquisite pieces down the runway, hoping to gain the respect and hype for next year’s buyers. From pattern-blocking to fringe, and midis to sequins, these designers (in my opinion) absolutely nailed their runway looks, and have me ready to see what hits stores next season!  Here is a recap of my top looks from my favorite designers from New York Fashion Week!

Lela Rose

Truth…I had never heard of Lela Rose until I saw this collection, but I like what I see! I think the pleating in these skirts is to die for, as is her color choice. To me she brought sexy back in a very modest and almost tom-boyish way. Notice the necklace too paired with the yellow ensemble. Great turquoise detail!

Lela Rose | Hermosa Jewelry

Reem Acra

Known for wedding gowns, this designer went a little more avant-garde on these pieces. While I wouldn’t say all are wearable, they are all beautiful pieces of art. I like the gold midi dress as a black-tie function ensemble, and the black V-Neck is hard to take your eyes off.

Reem Acra | Hermosa Jewelry

Diane Von Furstenburg

DVF can always capture the essence of a woman, and she has done it again in these looks. The gold shorts suit in particular is my favorite look as it commands attention. Judging by this collection, I think DVF is trying to target a younger audience and bring a new face to her brand. She’s nailed it with these silhouettes and color palettes.

DVF | Hermosa Jewelry

Rebecca Minkoff

I LOVE Rebecca Minkoff, and so I naturally love these looks. Sometimes a girl can feel most sexy in all white, black, or a mini dress, which is something the designer captures in these looks. I like that  you can see the continuity between the vest, belt, and detailing on the side of the pink dress in all three looks as well. And always, the designer throws a little fringe on her bags…something she seems to be known for lately.

Rebecca Minkoff | Hermosa
www.eonline.com

Leanne Marshall

Leanne Marshall made her debut as a designer on Season 5 of Project Runway, and has been go go go ever since. Though known for her enchanting wedding gowns, these pieces branch out of her typcial designs. though I am in love with the boho-style flow of the gowns, its the tie dye dress that pulls me in. It has a Kate Spade or JCrew mature/classic structure to it, yet the colors make it more fun and flirty than those designers tend to be.

Leanne Marshall

Lauren Conrad

LC no more. These days Lauren Conrad is running a lifestyle blog and is clearly busy designing her line for Kohl’s. I have to say I was a bit apprehensive about her collection, but one look and I was hooked. She has been able to capture a classic yet modern flirty feel in this collection of muted pinks and blues. What’s best about this collection is almost everything (except a few leather bags) is under $200.

Lauren Conrad | Hermosa Jewelry
www.eonline.com

Badgley Mischka

I love the florals and the yellow in this collection. Both dresses are beautiful in their own sophisticated way, however, the yellow ensemble is what grabs my attention. Though I love the way it is shown, what I like best about it is the ability to wear each piece separately.

Badgley Mischka
www.eonline.com

Brandon Maxwell

These pieces are structured, feminine, sexy, and edgy. Exactly how I want to feel dolled up for a night out on town. Add to that the fact that Brandon Maxwell is a first timer to Bryant Park and is known only for being Lady Gaga’s stylist, and we have ourselves the Cinderella Story of this years NYFW. All I can say is Bravo Brandon.

Happy Fashion Week to all my fashionistas. Here’s to seeing what Spring 2016 has to offer!

Guest Post: Beautycounter

Today, my good friend Drew is taking over the Hermosa Jewelry Blog for our first GUEST POST!  Drew and I have are having a SIP-SAMPLE-SHOP party with Hermosa Jewelry and Beautycounter tomorrow in the Old Village in Mt. Pleasant, SC.  I’ll let Drew take it away…
Guest Post: Beautycounter by Drew McKnight

All about my new favorite thing: Beautycounter, a beauty company dedicated to getting safe products into the hands of everyone

all about beautycounter from Living Well Kitchen

My love of Beautycounter all started a few months ago with a simple email. My friend, Katie, sent me a sweet email about her new passion Beautycounter and suggested I check it out.

Next thing I know I am rummaging through all my beauty products, reading labels, and filling my Beautycounter shopping cart with products.

After talking to Katie for almost 2 hours about Beautycounter – the fabulous products, the philosophy of the brand, and all about the growing company dedicated to getting safe beauty products into the hands of everyone, I immediately fell in love and decided to try a few things. A few days later, I purchased a few more things. And then a few days later I ordered a few more things.

Long story short, I am seriously obsessed with everything I’ve tried.

It’s funny that I am just now really investigating what is in beauty products. I mean extra time at the grocery store analyzing every single item that goes into my grocery cart which eventually goes into my body, but I’ve never given much thought to what I put on my body.

The skin is the body’s largest organ, so you obviously absorb what you put on it. If you take nothing else away from this post, I encourage you to remember to think not just about what goes in your body but also about what goes on your body.

all about beautycounter

Do you know what some of those words in your lotion’s ingredients even mean? Most people don’t. I didn’t until I started doing some exploring into that subject.

Something that I found to be incredibly upsetting is that over 80% of cosmetic ingredients have not been tested for safety… um, what?!

Or that the last year federal law was passed to govern cosmetics safety was in 1938 {that’s over 75 years ago!}

Seriously, this disturbs me to no end. Needless to say, I was immediately drawn to Beautycounter’s mission to get safe products into the hands of everyone.

Yes, there are lots of options for safe beauty products. But, truth be told, I don’t know that I have the brain capacity to remember or the time to figure out every ingredient that I should avoid.

This is why I love Beautycounter so much! They’ve done the work for me. Beautycounter restricts over 1500 ingredients in their products {compared to the measly 11 restricted in the US}, so I don’t have to worry about what I’m putting onto my body. Plus, the price point is really nice {no $60 face wash here; the facewash I like from Beautycounter is $24}.

If you’re like me and you can’t bear to throw out all your current products, don’t stress. However, I am encouraging you to take a look at your beauty products and learn more about what’s in them. Start with the products that you use the most and pick safer choices. You can wait until you run out of shampoo to replace them but don’t sacrifice your health just because it’s in your routine or it’s a little less expensive.

Here are some of my favorite, most recommended Beautycounter products

Touchup Skin Concealer Pen from beautycounter

Touchup Skin Concealer Pen: this was the first thing I bought and it continues to be the thing I rave about the most. It’s the best concealer pen I’ve ever used. I can wear it all day long and it is still on at night. It doesn’t make my uber-sensitive eyes hurt {yay!}. It’s the best!

beautycounter rosewater

Rosewater Uplifting Spray: I like to spray this on my face in the middle of the day. A quick spritz wakes me up a little bit and revives my make-up. It’s super refreshing and smells wonderful. Rosewater is beneficial for soothing and calming skin.

vibrant eye perfector from beautycounter

Countertime Vibrant Eye Perfector: I have the most sensitive eyes ever. I have tried countless eye creams but inevitably after a few weeks they start to irritate my eyes. It’s upsetting how expensive eye creams are and then to have them make your eyes hurt, ugh. But I’ve used this eye cream for two months {much longer than I’ve ever been able to use any other} and love that it doesn’t cause irritation. I can’t say that my dark circles have been diminished because I haven’t been watching out for that.

beautycounter lustro oil 3

Lustro Face Oil 3 – Ylang Ylang & Wild Chamomile: I honestly never thought I would put an oil on my face. That sounds so counterintuitive – I don’t want an oily face so I’m not going to put oil on it, right? Wrong! This face oil balances out oil production. It keeps my face smooth and soft but doesn’t break out my skin. I know it’s going to be a life saver when the cold weather is here to stay for a few months and my skin gets dry. You use a teeny tiny amount, so it lasts for a long time. I’m officially a face oil convert!
Just a note: there are three face oil options. The one I have {Lustro Face Oil 3} is for combination skin.

Lip Sheer from beautycounter

Lip Sheers: oh my gosh y’all these are the best things ever. They go on light but you can layer for a darker, more impactful color. The vanilla scent is amazing. Lipstick usually dries out my lips and lip balm can be boring, but these lips sheers keep lips nice and smooth with a pop {or a lot} of color. My two favorite colors {currently} are Scarlett and Twig.

Color Sweet Blush Duos from beautycounter

Color Sweep Blush Duo – Tawny/Whisper: I can’t describe how much I love this blush. There are three options and I really like all of them. But if I have to pick a favorite, this one is it. It’s almost like a blush and bronzer in one. It’s really natural looking on your skin and it feels amazing on your face.

eye duo from beautycounter

Color Shade Eye Duo – Pearl/Champagne: I love that it brightens my eyes {even after only 6 hours of sleep}. It’s subtle but build-able so you can make the colors more evident if desired. There are many other eye shadow options but in the spirit of including just my favorites {and not overwhelming you with every single thing}, this one is my most beloved color in my make-up bag right now. The Oyster/Amethyst duo is my other favorite.

Best,
