Kayla Itsines Beach Body Guide

Yall, I have never been more excited about a fitness trend than I am about Kayla Itsines Beach Body Guide (BBG.) If you have not heard about Kayla or her workouts, here is a quick summary. Hailing from Adelaide, Australia, Kayla Itsines is a 24 year old personal trainer and fitness guru who has recently taken the workout industry by storm. Having worked at a “women’s only” training facility in Australia she quickly learned what women are constantly trying to achieve in body images and goals.

Kayla Itsines founded the 12 week BBG program, and built a strong social media presence to share her fitness routines, tips, and healthy eating plans with others. She frequently shares her followers’ transformation pictures, which are truthfully what got me thinking “Hey, I can do this.” Her fans and followers are an inspiration, and she has a built a community that encourages each other to succeed.

I am not going to lie, these workouts are hard. BBG combines Resistance Training and LISS (low intensity steady state cardio). Resistance Training involves circuit training over a span of 28 minutes. Yes, 28 minutes is all it takes! You have two circuits each containing 4 exercises. Your goal is to do each exercise as many times as you can over the course of seven minutes, and then you move on to the second circuit. Each circuit is repeated twice. Think weighted squats, triceps dips, lunges, and push ups. If you are looking for a way to transform your body, build confidence, and feel amazing, I highly suggest trying her app. You can download it for a free 7 day trial, and after that pay about $5 per week for a 12 week subscription. In the meantime, I found a few of her free workouts online for you to check out.

Going Green and Lean with the Green Smoothie

This summer has been crazy between my business and personal life, and I sometimes forget to slow down and take a few minutes for myself. I find the summer is often packed full of plans that involve jewelry shows with cocktails and yummy treats, or happy hour with friends leaving me little time to fuel my body with the nutrients it wants. That being said, I have been on a health kick the past few weeks and wanted to share with you my new favorite breakfast , the Green Smoothie, that is sure to kick start your day, giving you the energy and nutrition you need to get back your lean and mean body!

The Green Smoothie

I know what you are thinking. I don’t have the time or the energy to deal with making smoothies every morning. You do! And I will tell you how.

You will want to make a few investments before you start your regimen (that is if you don’t already have a blender.) I suggest a Cusianart Immersion Blender and Stainless Steel Malt Cups, like the ones pictured below.

Next, you will need to go grocery shopping, and be prepared for some storage space in the freezer. You will need bananas, strawberries (frozen or fresh), orange coconut water, spinach, and a protein powder. I really like Aria Women’s Wellness Vanilla Protein but anything will work. Consuming protein each day along with daily exercise helps your body create more lean and toned muscles which I know we all want!

I like to prep my smoothies for the coming week. To do this, I slice the bananas into small coin shapes and freeze the pieces in ziplock baggies. Note: one banana per bag helps you control your portions. I like to buy my berries frozen, but if you decide to buy fresh, just cut them into smaller pieces and again freeze in controlled portions. Now you are ready for the week ahead!

I start out making my green smoothie by putting a hefty serving of spinach at the bottom of the malt cup. I then add half of a frozen banana (about 5-6 coin-sized pieces that you previously cut up) to the spinach. On top of that, I add a handful of frozen strawberries. While I let those sit and dethaw a tad (it makes it easier to mix) I measure out 1/2 cup of orange coconut water, and add another 1/2 cup of water to it. Mix in two scoops of your protein powder (or whatever your powder’s recommended serving is) and stir with a spoon to combine the liquid and powder. Pour over your fruit and veggies, and blend away!

You will end up with a beautiful and tasty green smoothie that fits perfectly into a pint glass like the one below!

There are so many different options when making this smoothie so be creative! Are you a chocoholic and despise spinach? Try chocolate coconut water with fresh berries and bananas. Maybe you prefer all greens! Try spinach, bananas, frozen granny smith apples, and coconut water.  For further reading, check out this is a great article with 7 Smoothie ingredients that nutrition experts love.  Its your breakfast to get creative with, just be sure to add some sort of protein to you lean shake to ensure you stay full through your morning!
